I grew up in South Dakota seeing billboard signs promoting “free ice water – xxx amount of miles to Wall Drug” peppered along the interstate highway. In the dust bowl of the Great Depression, entrepreneurs, Ted and Dorothy Hustead, settled in a town thought of as the center of nowhere. Determined to make their fledging business succeed, they offered cold water at no charge to weary parched travelers motoring across country. The once unusual advertisement spread to all U.S. states and beyond to other countries.
As we participate on a mission trip, we become mobile billboards. We too can offer free ice water to arid souls needing refreshment in remote locations. “Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.” Proverbs 25:25 NIV
Whereas other sources only temporarily satisfy, we can provide something that will quench perpetually. Jesus said, “…whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14 NKJV
KESHER TIP: Fill up your well. Continue spiritually preparing yourself for your mission trip. In addition to reading your Bible daily, supplement with Christian devotionals. Listen to worship and sermons in your car. Concentrate on messages that reflect God’s character and salvation through Jesus. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” 1 Peter 3:15 NIV
